Samsung UNC8000 Review – Introduction
Debuting at a $2799 suggested retail price, the
Samsung UN46C8000 is one of the first of the newest generation
of 3D TVs. Because of this, prospective owners are faced with several
considerations common among many first-generation products, most importantly
that the hardware will fail to become popular. Even if that occurs, owners would
still have a great 2D HDTV, even if it is one that is a little more expensive
than usual.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – Look And Feel
A vibrant 3D display isn’t the only feature that this Samsung plasma has to offer. The TV’s amazingly
slender frame is made possible because of LED edge-lighting, as opposed to the
usual method of back-lighting. The entire TV is encased in a stylish aluminum
frame, mounted on top of a unique stand with four legs. There might be some who
find the styling to be a bit futuristic, but most people find it a welcome
change of pace from the standard piano black gloss style that is so
pervasive.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – Internet Connectivity

The
Samsung UN46C8000 additionally offers a high-speed data port to network with Samsung’s
expanding line-up of Web content. The majority of the most popular content
partners are compatible with this model, including Blockbuster, Pandora, and
Netflix. Additionally, the TV also offers access to several services not
commonly found on 3D TVs, such as Vudu and Google Maps.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – Input Ports
Because of the TV’s extremely thin frame, there is an extremely low number of input jacks. In an incredibly
odd move, Samsung decided to not build any standard input ports into the TV.
Because of this, the inputs that are present are ones that Samsung engineered
specifically for this TV and do not fit any devices without the use of a special
adapter. Even though Samsung includes a full set of these adapters with the TV,
owners that need to replace broken or lost ones in the future will probably
struggle to find a retailer that sells them.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – Picture Processing
It’s incredibly common for TVs at this price point to come with a huge assortment of picture adjustment
options, such as contrast ratio, motion, color and more. While it’s possible for
these effects to do more harm than good, on the whole, the Samsung UN46C8000′s
processing features make an already great picture even better. The C8000 series
comes with an automatic contrast ratio adjustment feature, which rapidly reduces
the backlight during scenes with lots of black and increases it during extremely
bright scenes. This effect can be incredibly noticeable, and really gives the
picture quality a distinctive feel. One of the drawbacks, unfortunately, is that
this video processing mode cannot be turned off, meaning that prospective buyers
should definitely check the TV out in person before making a purchasing
decision.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – 2D Performance
Before getting into the 3D performance, it’s best to talk about how the TV performs in 2D mode. The
UN46C8000′s picture contained superb black levels as well as impressive white
levels. These two values combined amounted to a contrast ratio of 4024:1,
although those figures might be a little off because it wasn’t possible to
disable the automatic contrast ratio processing. However, just being anywhere
close to the 4000:1 range is still an amazing score. The TV also performed
admirably in color tests, although there was a noticeable lack of detail in dark
or complex scenes.
Because of the TV’s intelligent image processing, it
performed extremely well during motion tests. However, it’s possible for these
processing options to have an adverse effect on the picture quality, so users
will have to do some experimenting in order to find the setting that suits their
tastes.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – 3D Performance
Although the TV performed well during 3D testing, it still was not up to the quality of 3D
found in movie theaters. Keep in mind however, that this is still unrefined
first-generation technology. The chief problem is that the 3D quality falls off
every so often, mainly because of video frames meant for one eye crossing over
into the other eye.
Samsung UNC8000 Review – Conclusion
Ultimately, the conclusion of this Samsung UNC8000 review is that the
product is superb, with unique styling that sets it apart from other TVs on the
market. Prospective buyers willing to take the risk on first-generation
technology should definitely try to check the TV out in person before
purchasing. Although the 3D performance is still a bit unrefined, this should
not deter prospective buyers from being the first to adopt this new technology.
The Samsung UNC8000 series comprises the brand’s favored
showpiece models, and these televisions, particularly the 240Hz 46-inch set,
take center stage at any high-profile Samsung TV display. The Samsung UNC8000
series is not, of course, the ultra-high-end 9000 series, but most unbiased
industry critics, us included certainly, would argue that the 8000s are the
much better alternative. The 8000 models are significantly less expensive than
the 9000s, and all that the consumer sacrifices in that choice is the
touch-screen remote and some thinness along the chassis.
Defining the Samsung UNC8000 Series

Beyond the aggressive price structure, what defines the Samsung UNC8000 family
and sets it apart from other like models? Well, for one, these 3D-compatible
240Hz LED LCD Samsung TVs are the first such TVs to incorporate a new feature
called “precision dimming,” which we’ll discuss in more detail shortly. In
addition, all three models (46, 55 and 65 inches) provide full 1080p HDTV
viewing, Samsung SMART TV, ConnectShare Movie, AllShare, Skype support, two
built-in 10-watt speakers, a swivel stand and a wide array of connections,
including four HDMI ports.
Samsung UNC8000: The Future Is Now
Above, we mentioned features like AllShare, ConnectShare Movie and SMART TV,
but let us now put some verbs into those sentences. SMART TV is essentially
Samsung’s unique blend of Internet TV, all the features you’d expect plus
Samsung apps. ConnectShare Movie lets you watch video files directly from a USB
flash drive without the need for a third-party hardware/software media player.
Functionality-wise, ConnectShare behaves a lot like a WD TV Live. Lastly,
AllShare is the technology that allows you to synchronize every device, wired or
wireless, in your home.

The Samsung UNC8000 Brings Precision Dimming
Precision dimming, which some reviews were erroneously referring to as
“pinpoint dimming” early on, is a new yet similar alternative to local dimming.
The primary characteristic of both techniques is that colors appear much more
natural, and it gives us a broader range of natural color. The issue with local
dimming has been that it can produce “halos” around objects when the background
is dark. Precision dimming, however, uses many more LEDs, which gives it a far
greater degree of control. Therefore, it gives us all the color benefits
without any of the disadvantages.
3D TV Capability & Performance
Each LCD TV model in the Samsung UNC8000 family is 3D compatible (or 3D ready)
as well as providing full 2D support. Those terms can mislead, and they might
suggest inferior or even false 3D performance, but that is not the case. The
Samsung UNC8000 is a full-blown 3D television with edge lighting. It even
includes Samsung’s 3D conversion technology, and you’ll be able to watch 3D
broadcasts, watch 3D Blu-ray and even play 3D games. One issue is that it does
not include any glasses, but it’s an affordable entry point, and you can add
glasses in time.
What We Like
When the Samsung UNC8000 LCD TVs launched they boasted nearly every feature we
could hope for and then some. Well, here we are at the end of the first cycle
with new series arriving in a flurry, and the 8000s are still as crisp and
distinguished as they were on that first day we tested them. Something else we
really like is the price. Make no mistake: This is a high-end series, and you
pay for quality. But the price is coming down, the early-adopter premium is
gone and this is a television with an impeccable picture that is now just too
good a deal to pass up.
What We Don’t Like
Our first gripe then is our first gripe now: No 3D glasses come with this TV.
Samsung should have included at least one pair, especially now that the price
has dropped, and a slight price bump would mostly go unnoticed. Early on, our
other gripe was these sets were pricey compared to comparable models, and that
you might be paying too much, if you didn’t use all the features. However, now
that the price is dropping as sharply as it is, those concerns are gone. Some
critics have complained of screen uniformity issues, but in all our tests, we
haven’t noticed it ever.
Our Conclusion
The 8000s provide a superb range of color and superior blacks to deliver
intense picture quality. As mentioned, some complain of screen uniformity
issues, but what we think they’re seeing is the difference between backlit and
edge-lit LCD. We prefer edge-lit, but it may prove a little jarring to someone
mostly familiar with the other style. Once you’ve grown accustomed to it, we’re
confident you’ll prefer it too. The Samsung UNC8000 series also provides an
awesome range of features, and now that the price has fallen some, it is easily
one of the best deals available.
